Based on William Shakespeare's Othello, Jadavpur University students presented an adaptation, 'Nagma', which played on the power dynamics of gender disparity. Set in the backdrop of Muzaffarnagar and Lucknow, the play tries to remain faithful to the original text, yet bring about a refreshing taste of originality, quite akin to the culture of the respective area.
The play was first performed on the 30th of January, 2015 in Ranajay Karlekar Hall, Jadavpur University as a part of 'Special Winter School Course on Textual Travels: Cultural Transactions and Transformations Organised by the Department of English and Academic Staff College, Jadavpur University 19 January – 10 February 2015'.
At the National Drama Competition organized by Shakespeare Society of India, which was held at Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi, the team has won the following awards:
1) Best Over-all Performance
2) Best Actor (Sampreeti Sen)
3) Best Special Effects ( For Music)
It was again staged on the 26th of March in Vivekananda Hall, Jadavpur University on the occasion of "Womens Day Celebration" by the School of Women Studies, Jadavpur University.
